"Limón Dance Company member Belinda McGuire embodied both the lightest and the darkest moments of the troupe's program Friday evening at Skidmore College, performed before a sold-out house in the new Arthur Zankel Music Center.

In Jonathan Fredrickson's new work, "Chrysalis," McGuire is at first just one of a group of five warrior women. Feet stabbing the grounds, arms shooting to the sky, they move forward, rising and falling but always advancing. Then McGuire is set apart as the other women strip off her outer layers of clothing and cover her with a swath of black fabric. It's unclear whether they are exalting or exiling her, but the result is isolation and despair. McGuire's sweet face, sculpted musculature and tortured expression can't help but bring to mind Natalie Portman in "Black Swan."

In the revival of Limón's 1956 work "There Is A Time," McGuire's role is the diametric opposite. Dressed in pink, she flings her arms wide, jumps and gambols, smiles and twirls her skirts in a section choreographed to the Ecclesiastes verse "A time to laugh … a time to dance." The piece is set to Norman Dello Joio's commissioned score, "Meditations on Ecclesiastes," with each section corresponding to a phrase from the lyrics the Byrds made famous with "Turn, Turn, Turn." Limón's choreography captures the mood, often quite literally, of each line." (TRESCA WEINSTEIN)

"Belinda McGuire is impressive and dynamic in Hex, her solo of formal beauty and wide-ranging emotions. Music of choral voices and smooth strings by Gavin Bryars Incipit Vita Nov, subtle bluish lighting and a simple black dress give a soft and rich feel to the piece. McGuire's movement is also soft and rich, at times full of strife and flight and at times softly resigned and subdued... ...McGuire wears her dance warrior cred on her bleeding knee by the end of the piece, with wisps of hair around her sweat-misted face giving her the air of an angel or the scrappy ingenue she seems to be." "What a fantastic way to get psychologically warmed up! Belinda Mc Guire's solo, Hex, blended balletic grace with sharp gestures that seemed to repel and attract the audience at the same time. Her gossamer silk dress added an unusually buoyant quality to her tense muscularity." (KAREN KROLAK)

Backstage

"The most exciting discovery was Limón Dance Company member Belinda McGuire, who performed "Hex," an electrifying solo of her own creation. Introducing an original movement vocabulary full of jumps and turns grounded in ballet technique and an expansive, curvilinear use of the upper body, McGuire danced with a startling energy that suggested the presence of supernatural forces." "You have to give Belinda McGuire points for gumption. The Toronto-born dancer...has launched herself into an independent career ...she stretches and sprawls upon the stage, riding a turbulent emotional sea...bouncing about, girlishly and clownishly, like an Eve who has taken a bite and is totally unrepentant...She's like a wind-up toy, coiling up with concentrated energy that's released in wide wheeling motions of arms and legs..."
